General description

An unforgettable nine-day journey exploring the top-tourist attractions of the South of Morocco, diving into the landscapes and traditions of these amazing regions at the gates of the great Sahara.

Ancient fortresses of red earth, lush oases, steep canyons and golden sand dunes: this trip gives you the unique opportunity to experience all the charm and beauty of the South of Morocco, following the ancient rhythm of nomadic trade caravans who wondered for centuries across these lands. Travelling from Marrakech across the Atlas Mountains and the Ounila valley, we’ll reach the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, magnificent stronghold UNESCO world heritage site since 1987. From the ancient Ksar, we’ll drive along the legendary route of One Thousand Kasbahs, through the Valley of Roses and the beautiful gorges of Dadés and Todgha, to discover the life of the nomadic tribes of the Atlas mountains. Going south-east towards the Algerian border, we'll enter the amazing dunes of Merzouga, in the most unique and harmonious scenery, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The camels will take us to a traditional bivouac provided with all comforts in the hearth of magnificent golden sand dunes, where we’ll spend the night. Our journey will then continue across the Draa valley, endless oasis dotted with traditional Berber villages and suggestive ancient kasbahs. Our tour will end with the guided visit of the quiet town of Ouarzazate, with the beautiful Kasbah of Taorirte and its charming handicraft market. Before going back to Marrakech, short relaxing break at the green oasis of Fint, a real jewel at the foothills of the Atlas mountains. Upon request, horse riding, quad and mountain biking circuits, food demonstrations and tasting sessions, dinners with local host families and many other activities based on your interests and your budget.

Stages of the trip

Ait Ben Haddou
We’ll cross the central High Atlas at the Tizi 'n Tichka pass, heading south towards the ancient Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. We’ll travel along the beautiful Kasbah of Telouet and the steep cliffs of the Ounila Valley, on the ancient caravan trade route leading from Marrakech into the heart of Saharan Africa. Guided visit of the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou at sunset followed by traditional music sessions. Upon request, dinner with a local host family and night in a traditional guesthouse in the ksar at candlelight.

Roses Valley
We’ll start our second day trip early in the morning heading east toward the Roses Valley, to explore the richness and beauty of southern Morocco handicraft and architecture. Along the way, we’ll stop at the oasis of Skoura for a walking tour and a guided visit of the Kasbah of Amridil, beautifully hidden in a rich palm grove. Upon request, horse riding tours in the oasis.

Dadés Valley
We’ll spend our third day trip exploring the steep narrow canyons and the beautiful green oasis of the Dadès valley, dotted with traditional villages and ancient fortresses on earth and straw, in the heart of the most traditional Berber Morocco.

Todgha Gorges
We’ll spend the morning exploring the beautiful gorges and the green oasis of the Todgha river. On the way to the Ziz Valley, we’ll stop for a refreshing break at Ghéris oasis, tiny jewel enclosed between the High and the Anti Atlas, with a guided visit to the ancient Ksar of Goulmima, a remarkable example of Southern Morocco defensive architecture. Upon request, horse riding tours and short mountain trekking in the Todgha gorges .

Dunes of Merzouga
We’ll explore the lush region of Errachidia, a real mosaic of cultures and traditions on the road to the dunes of Merzouga. This fifth day of travel includes a camel trek on the rose golden dunes of the Erg Chebbi and an overnight stay in a traditional bivouac in the hearth of the dunes, provided with all comforts.

Draa Vally (Tazzarine)
Our journey continues across to the vast oasis of Draa down to the Saharan village of M'hamid, at the doors of the desert that marks the border between Morocco and Algeria. Along the way, we'll stop for a guided visit at the prehistoric rock paintings near the village of Tazzarine and a short walking tour in the Draa oasis.

On the way to the pre Saharan village of Zagora, we’ll visit the Museum of Tissargate, hosting an interesting collection on the Arts and Traditions of Draa Valley, and the Kasbah of Temegroute, important religious site dating back to the eleventh century, also renowned as place of production of a fine ceramic painted in ocher and blue. Camel trek and overnight staying in a traditional bivouac in the characteristic oasis of Zagora.

Draa Valley (Agdez)
We’ll continue exploring the lush oasis of Draa, with a guided visit of the colorful souk of Agdez and the Kasbah of Tamnougalt, beautiful example of earth and straw architecture of the plains. Departure for Ouarzazate in the late afternoon, with stop at the Oasis of Fint for a refreshinf break among palm groves, almond and fig trees.

Before leaving for Marrakech, we’ll explore the medina of Ouarzazate with guided visits to the impressive palace of Taorirte, beautifully restored in recent times, and the traditional handicraft souq. For cinema lovers, guided visit to the Cinema Museum and the world-renowned Cla Studios, with their suggestive installations in the heart of a stunning desert landscape.
