General description


If you only have a few days to taste the beauty and charm of the Great South of Morocco, Direction South invites you to a five-day trip across the High Atlas mountains, along the road of One Thousands Kasbahs towards the amazing sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, in Merzouga.

A circuit for 4x4 lovers, through lush oases, endless desert plateaux, steep canyons and magnificent fortresses of heart and straw, in the hearth of these ancient lands of transhumance. Starting from Marrakech, we’ll visit the famous Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and explore the stunning cliffs of the Todgha gorges, the vast oasis of Draa and the colorful souk of Agdez. The trip includes an overnight stay in a traditional bivouac in in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, where we’ll enjoy the unique and magical desert atmosphere while listening to the gentle music of the wind on fine golden sand. The staff of Direction Sud will also propose you to experience different leisure activities based on your desires and budget: traditional music sessions, dinners with local families, cooking demonstrations, walking, hiking, horse-riding and mountain biking tours, in order to make your holiday a truly intense and unforgettable experience.

Stages of the trip

Ounila Valley and Ait Ben Haddou
We’ll cross the central High Atlas at the Tizi 'n Tichka pass heading south toward the stunning Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, traveling along the picturesque ruins of the Glaoui Palace in Telouet and the steep canyons of Ounila Valley. Depending on your interests, the guided visit of the Ksar might be followed by short camel treks, horse riding, quad or mountain biking trails, traditional music sessions, local food tastings, cooking demonstrations or dinners with local host families.

Todgha Gorges
We’ll drive along the famous road of One Thousand Kasbah, exploring its most interesting and fascinating sites: the oasis of Skoura, the Roses and Dadés Valley and the Todgha Gorges. Nature lovers and adventure seekers will enjoy a long hike in the lush oasis of the Todgha river and along the nomadic paths on the mountains surrounding the cliffs. Upon request, climbing lessons and sessions both for beginners and experienced climbers.

Merzouga
We’ll start our day trip early in the morning traveling east toward the desert dunes of Merzouga, stopping for a guided visit at the Ksar Al Khorbat in Tinjdad and at the Saharan villages of Erfoud and Rissani. Camel ride across the rose sand dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset and overnight stay in a traditional desert bivouac provided with all comforts.

Draa Valley
We’ll drive across the largest oasis in North Africa, exploring the narrow paths that twist across lush palm groves and discovering beautiful ancient kasbahs and traditional villages in earth and straw. Guided visit of the Kasbah of Tamnougalt and the traditional souk of Agdez, where the scent of spices and dates fills the streets.

Ouarzazate
We’ll spend our last day trip exploring the charming treasures of the city of Ouarzazate, with a guided visits of the beautiful Taorirte palace, finely restored in recent times, and the Kasbah of Tifoultout. Nature lovers will enjoy a refreshing break at the lush oasis of Fint, before going back to Marrakech.
