General description


A short trip designed for those travelers wishing to immerse themselves into the charm and magic of Sahara cultures, through oases, fortresses of red earth and golden sand dunes. A few kilometers rom the southern border with Algeria, on the ancient caravan trade route leading to Timbuktu, the village of M'hamid is the final destination of this three-day journey across southern Morocco's pre-saharan and Saharan regions. We’ll reach a traditional bivouac in the heart of the first dunes of the desert passing through the lush palm grove of the Draa Valley, in the foothills of the Atlas mountains. During the trip, we’ll explore traditional villages, ancient souks and beautiful fortified kasbahs hidden in luxuriant oasis, emblems of the old wars between berber and nomadic tribes. The tour includes traditional music evenings, night in a traditional bivouac and food tasting sessions.

Stages of the trip

Agdz
Our journey across the Great South begins with a guided visit of the old souk of Agdez, where the scent of dates and spices fills the streets. The day will continue with a guided visit to the kasbah of Tamnouggalt and the exploration of the oasis, by hiking or mountain biking along narrow paths that twist through the palm groves.

M'hamid
Heading south toward the Saharan village of M'hamid, we’ll stop for a guided visit at the ancient village of Tamegroute, commercial and religious Sufi center also famous for the production of a fine ocher and blue ceramic. In the afternoon, camel trek to the traditional bivouac in the first dunes of the desert, where we’ll spend the night.

Zagora
On the way back to Ouarzazate, we’ll stop for a pic-nic at the palm grove of Zagora, in a beautiful pre-Saharan landscape. Our journey will finally end in the lush oasis of Fint, a little corner of paradise among olive, almond and fig trees.
